I said, "Games. A lot of games, new games that are to them."

But, for 4 days of the Kansai University students' stay here in the House of Joy,

I've realized it's not only the games.

It's also the sincerity and willingness of visitors to play with them and talk with them.

And it's good to see Kansai Students has given that to HOJ children.

Indeed a Mr. Nice Guy!!! Obedient and thoughtful.

At the age of 2, this child can almost memorized the songs and steps of their dances during programs. He would never hesitate to perform to please our visitors.

Most Neat and Clean

She did not expect the award but she really is neat and clean.

She's a nice girl. She always follow the policies in the center.

Most Responsible Children

You can never say anything bad about this child. He is very good in the center. He participates in every activity and chores despite his being a low vision child.

She is always mistaken as a boy because of her boyish look and the way she walks but she is very responsible towards her younger roommates like a Nanay.

She dances and sings well and knows how to prepare food for everyone. A very talented child!!!

Just this morning Prof. Maki, Ate Haru, Kuya Yusoke and Ate Kana left House of Joy to go back to Japan.

Children expressed their happiness with the games prepared by Prof. Maki and Kuya Yusoke and the activities such as bracelet making and message writing.

Ate Kana and Ate Haru were emotional when they said goodbye to the children. They were here for almost three weeks and have interacted with the children well.

Though the four have left the House of Joy, children were so thankful for the memories of joy, laughter and lessons they have learned from them.

Traits of HOJ Children

Ever since I came here in the House of Joy, I have appreciated some positive Filipino traits that the HOJ children have established in themselves and I know, that when they go out of this foundation, they will carry it wherever they go...

Respect for elders. HOJ children never fails to put their elder’s hand to their forehead every time they came from school, when elders arrive, or every after church mass as sign of their respect. Saying “po” & “opo” when talking to an older person is also observe to them which only means that they have learned to be polite as they stay in the House of Joy.

Responsibility. Children will wake up early in the morning to clean the HOJ premises, from their rooms to their area outside. Sweeping, watering the plants, weeding, scrubbing, washing their own plates, clothes, folding their clothes and putting it on their respective cabinets.

Asking for forgiveness. Recently, Jerica cried while saying Jeremy bit her arm. There was really a mark of his teeth on Jerica’s arm. When I came to ask why, Jeremy approached Jerica saying “Sorry, ate.”, several times, without being told to do so. Jeremy’s eyes were so apologetic and he was touching Jerica with an intent to ease the pain of his bite. This only means that even a 2 year old boy has learned the value of asking forgiveness after making a mistake.

Praying the rosary. Even the younger children of HOJ has already memorized the rosary. They have learned how to lead praying and it is very heartwarming when you would listen to them and as they say intentions, they would mention all the people who have helped them and the people of HOJ to be always okay.

Debt of Gratitude. Yesterday, children visited their Nanay Goring who is currently suffering from a mild stroke. They took Nanay’s hand to their forehead as their sign of respect. They were there because for more than ten years that Nanay Goring served the House of Joy and the children themselves, Nanay Goring deserves to be shown concern. Nanay Goring was a disciplinarian to them but they knew very well that Nanay cares for them by cooking their food and ensuring that the vegetables they eat were cleaned as well as tidying the kitchen before and after cooking.

The Cooking Contest!

Teaching children how to cook and the importance of eating cheap but nutritious food was the main purpose of the cooking contest. They were given a budget for that certain activity and it was held at Urawa beach. At 12 o'clock everything was ready and it turned out that they were able to cook nutritious and delicious meals, of course with the supervision of their houseparents.

Here were the foods they cooked.

First place. "Ginisang Tangkong"

Second place - "Ginatang Talong"

Third place - "Pinakbet"

Fourth place - "Chopsuey"

Marites showed her talent in ballroom dancing with her partner, Narciso, a Kasing-Kasing Scholar.

HOJ was greatly honored by the presence of Consul Yoshiyuki Isoda, the Consul of Japan.

Ms. Rey Ann Olvido, a former Kasing-Kasing Scholar who is now a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture but is currently serving the HOJ as a Kasing-Kasing Schoalrship Program Coordinator. She shared the trials of her life when she was still a student. Poverty was never a hindrance to her. She said she almost gave up, but with the advise given to her by the HOJ Executive Directress, Mrs. Aida Karasuyama, she pursued her education despite the difficulties she encountered. Rey Ann has become an inspiration to the students during the foundation day.

Kasing-Kasing Scholar showcased their surprise number.

Mr. Itsuo Karasuyama, the founder of the HOJ Foundation, Inc. who also celebrated his 53rd birthday dedicated his message to the HOJ children and scholars. People think he is rich, but he is not. It's the sponsors that has made the HOJ continue to survive for 14 years, mostly from the Japanese people. He emphasized his love for God, the reason he also loves children. He said, one shouldn't just love himself and his family, but EVERYONE. He is Japanese, but he is loving the Filipino children as much as he loves his family and the people of Japan.

Him. Little Jeremy. Our 2 year old child in the House of Joy. He speaks only the last syllables of words but he knows how to communicate what he feels. He usually asks for milk, a pencil and a paper when he goes in the office. He likes to boast what he has written on the paper, usually he draws circles and circles and circles and lines can't be understood. He is so cute you can't help but to smile. You ask anything, he would always give you an answer.

Hajime and Tomoko’s Wedding

They had been legally married since February 14, 2009 in

They chose to come here in Philippines to have a church wedding
in the place they considered as their second home,

They used to be the happy go lucky people not until Hana came to their lives.

They have become more independent and responsible parents.

Of course! Celebration will not be completed without the presence

of the parents. They also came to Philippines to support Hajime and Tomoko.

The celebration was very solemn and very touching especially

when the couple's parents gave their message to their children.

To Hajime and Tomoko, congratulation! Please take care of
each other and please continue to be a responsible parent to
Hana and to the rest of your children. You know every
HOJ child’s stories_ so please try to be good.

Lately, a lot of things happened in the center. In fact these past days were so busy;
chasing children who ran away because of the broken plate,
accidentally met an accident caused by a ball slipped from a child's hand
and had conference with the educators in the elementary school.

We told the children that whenever they made a mistake they should face it
and never run from it. Sometimes they learned to say sorry and
sometimes they stayed quiet perhaps because they are guilty or just scared of what had happened.

On the other hand, the conference with the educators was something memorable for me.
I never saw a teacher crying infront of many asking for forgiveness not until yesterday.
I filed a complain against a teacher because of her unexcusable treatment towards our children.
She was forgiven before because thinking that she would never do it again.
Unfortunately, she did and even put blames to others especially to our children and that made them
(our children) really get affected. So, I made an action.

It was not easy for me to do such thing (filed a formal complain to DEPeD)
but it is my job to protect our children. Three days after I mailed the letter of complain,
the DEPeD immediately answered and made an investigation.

Yesterday was the final conference. I demanded for suspension for some lesson
but after asking of what the consequences are; I decided to give her last chance with
the assurance from the DEPeD that she will do it again, no conference will be held...
immediate sanction will be implemented already.

We are responsible to our own action. Before we will do such thing,
we should think first whether that action will be good for you or not.
Every action has a consequence and we should face it.
We should not blame others. Blaming is an act of being irresponsible.

And lastly, I have high respect to the teacher. I hope this will not happen again.
We know that we chose our own profession because we love it,
we have passion to do it. If we have our personal problems, set aside them
and let us do our job very well. Indeed, children, sometimes, are very hard to discipline.
But we are taught and called to understand them more.
In addition, I believe that children will not disrespect certain person
if that person shows deep compassion and understanding to them,
in general...showing respect for who they are.

We are much honored and privileged that Consul Yoshiyuki Isoda together with Dr. and Mrs. Sazaki of Rotary Club Miyagi, Japan chapter and East Davao chapter headed by Pres. Go came to visit House of Joy on January 9, 2010.

They were actually turning over the new ambulance mobile to the Municipality of San Isidro. Indeed, another blessing to the community of San Isidro.

We are also hoping that we can pursue build a new building for the children which will be occupied by the boys through the help of our friends with benevolent heart.

Trip to Isla Reta, Samal

HOJ staff were able to take 2-days off. Everyone went to Isla Reta, Samal.
The view was great. It was totally fit for relaxation.

It was supposedly a trip for Mr. & Mrs. Karasuyama by the person closest to them. A gift for their 25th anniversary. However, they chose to share the gift they receive with us.

Indeed, we're so thankful to them...It shows their selflessness and there's no doubt why they are so blessed.

Thank you very much for the wonderful and meaningful gift. Happy 25th Anniversary Ma'am Aida and Sir Ichan.

Friendship started on October 31, when Sagop Palad came to House of Joy.
The bonding continued when Sagop Palad invited us to go and celebrate with them on their "PANAGTAGBU SA PASKO 2009" (Meeting on Christmas 2009).

During the torch lighting on the opening ceremony of the program led by the founder of House of Joy, Mr. Itsuo Karasuyama and Executive Director of Sagop Palad Foundation, Inc, Ms. Annabelle McCarthy.

In relation to the Maguindanao Massacre, indeed it was a very devastating and injustice act. We are as one to those who grieve. Personally hoping that victims attain the real justice. No one wants that to happen...but only the perpetrators.

9th Regional Fun Day

DepEd gives importance to the rights of differently able children. Now, they are now celebrating the 9th Regional Fun Day. This event aims to promote the rights of the children and boost their confidence through showing their different skills and talents.

Five from House of Joy were given the privilege to join.

During the mass at House of Joy: Father shared to everyone that Roger is a good altar boy. Roger told once that he wants to become a priest so let's pray for him.
He will also compete in Mati this coming November 29 for the soccer event. He is the captain ball of the team: Small but terrible indeed!!

On October 31, 2009, Sagop Palad Foundation, Inc., came to visit House of Joy. Children of both center had a great bonding as well as the staff.

On Sunday, ball games and other parlor games were being played by four teams with mixed members from House of Joy and Sagop Palad. Toys were given to Sagop Palad children as a token of appreciation.

Also, not just the Sagop Palad staff and children came to visit to House of Joy but also the alumni of the center: Lalang, Kit-kit and Jun-Jun which they called themselves the "Simon Band" everytime they perform in the center. Also, it was the chance of Marites and Marilyn to get bonded with their Kuya Kit-kit.

Field Trip in Davao

Every year, House of Joy treats children for a two-day field trip in Davao City. Usually, it falls end of October.

Children were having the chance to see the biggest crocodile in Davao, snakes, monkeys, dragon and many other animals that children could hardly see

It was not just all fun but also educational. After crocodile park, everyone went to Butterfly House. However, before that, the staff gave us a lecture on life cycle of the butterfly and its habitat. Children were able to learn the difference of butterfly and moth and how to take care of them. After which, they were able to learn as well about the bees. Don't you know that male bees will not sting you..only the female bees. after that, we got the chance to taste the honey. yummy!!!

Of course! how could we forget Jollibee? It's every child's favorite. Well, we ate our lunch at Jollibee.

after having lunch and two hours playing at Gaisano Mall, we went to Boys Town where Marton came from. Marton shed tears when we bid goodbye to them..

On the second day, Mr. & Mrs. Karasuyama brought the children to watch airplane closer to their sight. When Ma'am Aida asked the children to write something about their experience in Davao, Mitchie wrote that the experience was totally wonderful and that she will try her best to finish her studies because someday, she wishes not just to watch the plane but also to ride on it.

And earnestly, in behalf of the the House of children, I would like to extend out heartfelt gratitude to Mr. & Mrs. Karasuyama for letting them experience to feel and see the beauty outside san Isidro and of course, to all the benefactors, because of you all, every child in House of Joy enjoys these privileges.

We volunteer to help clean the water tank...since everyone was busy doing their own duties. Marton and Roger helped us too since they didn't have class. The experience was too tiring yet very fulfilling and we enjoyed so much.

Daily Activities

Morning and afternoon, children have specific task to do. Even the youngest one needs to be trained simple chores.

During school days, we don't allow the children to play much to save their energy during study period at night and for the next day activities. They have their study period right after praying the rosary.

To pay off their hard work in school and doing their chores in the center, during saturday they will all go to Urawa Beach to play, swim and whatever things they want to do.

Starting Friday afternoon, they are allowed to play and watch movie at night.

Playing soccer is their favorite sport they play At Urawa Beach with Kuya Yoshi whom they fondly call now as Kuya Daddy = )

House of Joy has been helping the community of San Isidro through Kasing-kasing Scholarship Program for 12 years. It provides school supplies to scholars and pays their annual school fees.

It also provides training and other activities to children to help them develop their talents and skills.

On October 17, 2009, House of Joy held the 2nd General meeting. This is very crucial to discuss issues and other concerns of the scholars.

During that day also , scholars got the chance to help clean outside of the San Isidro Parish Church.

Sara (left) one of the scholars. She excels academically. Yearly, she is the representative of her grade level to compete in Math Quiz Competition for about 11 competitors from different school.

Preparation for the Kasing-kasing Scholarship Program: The day before the meeting Mr. Karasuyama and his staff went to Davao to purchase school supplies that would be distributed to the 80 scholars.

Rey Ann is a scholar of House of Joy for 10 years.
She is now graduating in college major in Agriculture.
According to her, she is very grateful being accepted as scholar of Kasing-kasing.

As soon as the supplies arrived, staff and some children voluntarily help to pack everything to make sure that every scholar would get what they needed in school.

On October 14, 2009, the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental and Local Government of San Isidro held a Medical Outreach Program to thousand of people in San Isidro.

Free check up and medicines were provided.

Of course! Our children were also beneficiaries of the said medical outreach. Thanks to the government of Davao Oriental.

One thing that will truly admire to House of Joy is that Mr. Itsuo, founder (left side photo: wearing white short) and Mrs. Aida Karasuyama, Director ( right photo) always have chance to play with the HOJ children. This is one way of showing and letting the children feel that they are loved and they deserve it despite of the sad experiences they've had before.

TOUCHING OUR LIVES

Every visitor has their own stories on how the children have touched their lives. Even me, being a staff for four years I have so many stories to share how the children helped me become a better person.

Currently, we have visitors which I believe affluent, very influential and respected in Japan. They came to visit their son. At first, I was thinking that people should be very careful in talking to them. But I was amazed how they reached their hands to us; Filipinos more of to children. They gave their time to share their smile and amazingly dance and sing with the children.

Last night, my tears almost fell down when they said “You are the teachers of my son. You help him become a grown up man and able to share his pure heart, Thank you very much” I may not know the reason behind those lines but I felt the love and respect to their son. Before the program ended, I asked the son to give his message which he did. Though he had never spoken that much… Tears and simplest way of saying thank you to his parents was the one of the best and sincere way of expressing I’ve ever heard and seen.

This way, I am expressing my gratitude to children for touching our lives. They may too young and innocent but even the richest people, by the power of their love and smile, they able to let them smoothen their heart. Indeed, children have the power to be teachers in their own ways. They have touched our lives and they have made us become a better person.

Also, the scene last night made me realized that I should give more importance to my family more on to my parents.

Recent activity that we have conducted for the parents/relatives of the children. It was a one-day activity which was facilitatd by the Social Workers: Ms. Gemma dela Cruz, RSW (DSWD), Mrs. Elna G. Arenal, RSW (MSWDO) and PO1 April Love Cabañog, Women and Children's Desk Police Officer. The event was also in line with the celebration of the National Family Week.

Do you still remember Jeffrey? He is the elder brother of Roger. He reunited with his biological father last January 2009. He was longing for a parental care and since it was the best interest of the child, House of Joy brought him back to his father.

I would like to give credits to the woman behind the success of House of Joy.

She is misjudged oftentimes. Others think she is strict and feel less love to children. But the truth, She had sacrifices a lot to the center. She had to wake up early in the morning to make sure that visitors have eaten delicious breakfast to make sure that children have done their responsibilities very well. It is not her duty but she loves doing it to express her love to everyone in the center.

She understands that children need parental care that even these children are not her own, but the way she treats them is more than a mother could ever treat and give.

This month we are celebrating Family week and everyone is giving salute to the mothers out there! I salute my mother for being the best mother to me and I salute Ma’am Aida for all the sacrifices she has done to the children and for her family. I salute how she humbly accepts all the responsibilities, more than an Executive Director can do.

Prof. Makino is a psychologist by profession. He is a Professor of Setsunan University, Japan. He came to visit and make good memories with the children. She was so lucky to be invited to join World Youth Meeting through Prof. Makoto Kageto, chairman of the said event and a professor of the sponsoring school. Christina enjoyed so much the warmth welcome and hospitality of her host families and newly found friends.

Her newly found friends during her trip in Japan. As being relayed by her, she was so glad and still feels lucky to be part of such prestigious event. Because of the Nihon Fukushi University through Prof. Kageto, she had experienced wonderful memories.

GREAT THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU LESS EXPECT IT

When I came to House of Joy, I felt nervous since it's my first time to be employed after graduation. I never could imagine myself staying here for a long time. I thought I would only last for a month. San Isidro is totally different from where I came from though it was not new to me plus the fact being away from my family was totally far than I could imagine. However, need to survive for my own sake.

Six months later, I was in denial when our founder kept telling during programs that people easily fall in love with the children. I tried to keep myself not to be attached with the children as far as my profession concerned. I failed. I fell in love with them and maybe staying for more than a month is a big proof that I really did.

Now, I have been here for almost four years. I survived and still love it. House of Joy was my first employment and it helped me strengthen my faith to God since I was kept asking for a job at that time. After that, I never really expect anything big opportunities aside from local seminars and conferences but God is so good through Prof. Kageto, he opened a great opportunity to me to go to Japan. All free. It was last year (2008). Thirteen days of staying there was so memorable to me. I spent my birthday there but what made me so touch that I never expected was that Japanese despite of being so busy... Japanese acquaintances and friends left good impressions to me. They were so great. They are so nice and hospitable and it impressed me much how hardworking they are. Well of course, we could not deny the fact being part of the first world country; Japan is really a nice place to live in.

Right from the start, I never expect anything big opportunities as this so now I believe that great things happen when you less expect it. You just need to keep asking to God and be patient until things happen but of course you need to act it out. If you just keep on asking without doing anything to realize your dreams, it useless to ask then.

And I also want to express my gratitude to the people behind House of Joy and the people who helped me land to this job. Thank you for believing in me. I will do my best not to dismay you. Well, of course to my family as well since they are the ones who help me become a strong yet lovable person.
